Leaving Keel When Moored?
Just wondering whether it is ok to leave the swing keel down when my RL24 is moored? My RL is permanently moored at Pittwater and the winch is very slow to bring up the keel, so I often leave it down.

Keel down on mooring
Tim it is not a good idea to leave your swing keel down on the mooring, the growth will choke the slot and the keel will collect more. When the keel is housed the movement will deter growth . best to leave the keel down about 50 MM only to keep slot open.

keel Down
The keel has a retaining wire which of course sits in the water when the keel is down. I have been told thet constant emersion is always going to cause more of a problem then transient emersion. So I pull mine up after each sail.

Heck I sometimes dont even put the keel down when sailing. depends on the current and direction of the sail. I am definately a lazy sailor.
