RL24 Keel wire noise
My keel wire hums above 4 knots or so & the pitch changes with speed. Are there any tried and tested methods of eliminating this noise on RL24's ? I'm a bit concerned about how long the wire is going to last.
Appreciate your thoughts.

Re: RL24 Keel wire noise
When I had my '24 I too had the hum, (I found it quite pleasant, at least I knew I was getting along a bit!) The main area of concern is not the actual wire itself but where it is swaged on at the keel end, it will corrode and break. Six years ago this happened to me, I am lucky I have a marina next door that has one of those big fork lifts, I replaced the wire with spectra and a simple bowline through the eye of the keel. When I sold the boat I replaced it as I had promised too and it showed absolutely no signs of wear. Tip don't make the bowline too big, it wont fit up into the casing!
Hope this helps
Martyn
don't know whats happening, every time I try to reply I have issues,
probly dumb operator.
no the spectra did not stop the noise but it did not show any signs of wear after 5 yrs
not sure that the noise would cause that much drag, however any vibrating item has movement and therefore increases its surface area

Re: RL24 Keel wire noise
The humming of my keel wire is now a distant memory as I have it completely clear of the trailing edge of my keel. Gets rid of the noise and is much faster due to the reduction in drag. See pic attached.

Martyn,

Did this eliminate the hum ?

Re: RL24 Keel wire noise
Darryn, have you just revealed your speed secret?
The diagram isn't clear enough for me to see all the details but I get the principle involved and am impressed. Any chance of a clearer diagram?
Is your boat fitted with the heavier keel as in mk3's?
Your lift point requires a bigger effort than the standard point but with the 2:1 system that should be negated to some extent. Do you expect it will work on a Mk 3?

Re: RL24 Keel wire noise
Mike, No secrets here, I am happy to email you all my photos, diagrams, winch number, sheave and wire size, any info at all that you may need for anything just ask. My keel is not as heavy as the MKIII as far as I know, mine weighs in at around 120Kgs. Yes there would be a lot of load on the sheave that I have mounted in the top corner of the keel and I always make sure the keel is lowered onto the supporting keel roller before traveling. so far I have had no issues with this set up since installing around 6 years ago.
