INTERESTING LETTER
ROB AND I RECEIVED THE FOLLOWING LETTER FROM BRUCE CASTLES 7/12/1975. I'M THE ORIGINAL BOWER BIRD AND DUG THIS ONE OUT OVER THE WEEKEND. DEAR ROB AND JUNE CONGRATULATIONS ON THE ARTICLE IN SEACRAFT, REALLY GOOD. YOU MAY BE INTERESTED IN AN EXPERIENCE WE HAD RECENTLY IN THE SUNDAY ISLAND RACE AT PORT ALBERT (20 MILER). WHILE SAILING IN LIGHT, VERY OVERCAST CONDITIONS, THE ENTIRE MIXED FLEET OF ABOUT 30 BOATS WAS WIPED OUT BY A FRONT (NOT FORCASTED). THE ABC NEWS FOLLOWING REPORTED GUSTS TO 160KMS HR. WHICH MUST BE AN EXAGGERATION, BUT IT WAS STRONGER BY FAR THAN ANYTHING I HAVE EVER BEEN IN BEFORE - CERTAINLY UPWARDS OF 70 MPH. THERE WERE THREE RL24s THERE, 100, 102 & 103 - WE WERE LAID ON OUR BEAM ENDS WITH FREED SHEETS AND HELD FLAT FOR HALF A MINUTE OR SO BY THE FIRST FRONT, AFTER WHICH ALL RIGHTED AGAIN WITH VIRTUALLY NO WATER ABOARD. WE THEN GOT AN ANCHOR OUT AND SET ABOUT DROPPING SAIL. THE FURLER WOULD NOT START TO ROLL THE JIB THE WIND WAS SO STRONG, AND BY THE TIME WE DROPPED THE MAIN' THE CLEW OF THE JIB HAD FLOGGED TO PIECES ON THE MAST. KEN AND DON HAD IDENTICAL DAMAGE, BUT APART FROM THIS, ALL THREE RIGHTED FROM A SAILS IN THE WATER POSITION AND RETURNED UNDER MOTOR WITHOUR DAMAGE. THE ENTIRE DINGHY AND CAT FLEET WERE WIPED OUT WITH MUCH BROKEN GEAR, AND A TS16 TURNED TURTLE AND HAD TO BE TOWED IN. BRUCE CASTLES.

PS OUR FIRST FIBREGLASS RL24 TIKI 111 WAS LAUNCHED IN JULY 1973. WE TOOK HER TO THE S.A. "TRIPOLIS" THAT YEAR AND WON IT BY 6.5 HOURS. THEY CALLED US THE ROCKET FROM WOOMERA, WON IT AGAIN IN 1975 AND AGAIN IN THE RL28 IN 1977
