What is the best size motor to suit the RL 24

Re: outboard
A 5hp short shaft outboard with high thrust propeller in the well.

For what its worth my choices would be Honda 5, Mercury 5hp 2 stroke, Mercury 6hp 4 stroke, Yamaha 2 stroke and Suzuki.

Consider whether you need a electric charger.

If its on a bracket over the stern, the Honda long shaft 5 or the Mercury sail drive 6hp are the obvious choices.

Re: outboard
On Chill Ouat we use a 5 hp short shaft merc.
We find that it pushes the boat along fine in all weather. When we got the motor we made sure we got the motor with the inbuilt fuel tank as well as the remote fuel tank. We find that when we are club racing we use the inbuilt fuel tank more than the remote tank. The inbuilt tank holds a few liters of fuel and will run for over an hour on that tank alone.

Re: outboard
I have a one and a half hp. Johnson Colt on my RL 24, it is a little underpowered upwind during a squall, but very economical!

Re: outboard
I had an 8hp merc on my '24 which was very good crossing Moreton Bay when sailing wasn't an option. I now kave a '28 and am using the same engine, strangely the '28 seems to move a bit faster than the '24 did??
