My Honda 15HP 4 stroke looks like it is getting on and I am considering perhaps a sail drive because I intend to keet the RL28 for a while. the diesel may be cheaper to run, at least, it can run on coconut oil if petrol runs out. If their is any experience on installation issues or tricks of the trade re installation it would be helpfull. I am looking at either a 2YM15C yanmar or a Volvo sail drive. Currently at QCYC there are 3 RL 28 which is a good start to a fleet in addition to 2 No RL24s. At the start of the Brisbane to Gladstone I noted a diesel powered RL28 chugging along the creek
Ken. The dimensions for fitting a Volvo sail drive are listd with a sketch on this site. Go to The RL story--- desigining the RL28-- episode 3. I found the Volvo motor the best, and we fitted quite a lot of them. With the folding prop they were very efficient. One was brought to my attention recently that was for sale, it was built in 1980 and had 5500 hours on the clock.
Sandpiper has a Volvo Penta Diesel Saildrive and honestly I think it is the best motor I have ever had in a boat. Powerful, very fuel efficient and reasonably quiet.
Just last weekend we were motoring down the Qld coast with 6 of us on board. The average speed was 5.5 knots and we were talking and chatting without the noise of the engine drowning anyone out.
I don't think I would ever go back to an outboard again!!
We motored most of the way back to Manly yacht club from Airlie beach recently with our Volvo single cly diesel 9hp RL28, doubt if I would dare do that with an outboard. Volvo don't make our single anymore but a twin with more power, even better ! same dimensions too. Very expensive though.
