RL28 Actual Weight
Hi Guys.
I recently purchased my RL28 and immediatley put it over a weigh bridge to get a Gross weight of boat and trailer and then dropped the boat off the trailer to get the weight of the trailer.

I was a little shocked.
Gross weight of boat and trailer was 2820kg. The trailer on its own was 700kg which means the RL28, Mk2, is 2100kg.

The boat is fitted with the Volvo Diesel motor. The front water tank was empty and the fuel tank had 5L in it. The boat, being newly aquired, did not have any personal items on board when it was weighed.

Does the boat weight of 2100kg sound correct for an RL28?

Re: RL28 Actual Weight
Yes Garry, that sounds about right. My boat when new fully fitted out, with an outboard, measured just over 2 tonnes on the crane, although I am not sure how accurate their measurements are.

I dread to think what 20 years of "useful" items has added.

Re: RL28 Actual Weight
Thanks Keith.
I also wonder what the all up weight is going to be once we make it "comfortable"!!

Oh well. I am very impressed with the boat and how it handles so far.
It is the best compromise I have found yet between a fixed keel cruiser and a trailer sailer.

With full water tanks and fuel tank (extra 300kg), and a fixed pitch prop on the diesel sail drive dragging in the water, we still managed 5.2 knots under sail yesterday in 10 knots of breeze.

I was very happy.

Re: RL28 Actual Weight
Rings-n-things plus trailer weighs in at 3.3tonnes with cruising gear and our trailer is the original light Tinka trailer that came with the boat.

Re: RL28 Actual Weight
Given that most 4WDs don't go above 3T, does anyone worry too much about the gendarmes requesting a weighbridge visit for the 28 ? .. or do those who might know the story have a soft spot for fellow trailer sailors ?

Re: RL28 Actual Weight
Now i'm starting to wonder about the accuracy of weighbridges!
I have weighbridge tickets (self & previous owner) of 2.3 & 2.5t. Given that the (1988) specs give the empty weight of the boat (without motor) as 1360kg, that sounded about right, as the custom trailer is fairly light. My 1982 RL28 has the diesel motor.

Re: RL28 Actual Weight
I guess when you think about it, 3,000kg (approx) is not all that bad for a solid, 28 foot yacht.
It does feel like a handfull behind the Nissan Patrol but I do believe that is more a trailer balancing issue rather than the actual weight of the boat.
