RL24 Mainsail
Has anyone used a 16ft skiff main? Do you need to replace the mast as well. My mast has an extra pair of side stays which appear to act as back stays but no pure back stay?

Re: RL24 Mainsail
Hi Warren
I am about to try 16 ft Skiff Main but I have been told there are no problems besides back stay.
The back stay ofers the mast considerable suport down wind and alows you to flaten the main.
I do not know how the iners coulsd provide the suport like a back stay.
I will tell you how the main goes

Re: RL24 Mainsail
Warren it sounds like you have a Mk4 swept back rig which does not have a backstay. This rig suits mainsails with large roaches. The Mk4 mast without backstay is bent when rig tension increases or wind load flexes the mast. The Mk4 mast should be a lot more flexible than other masts that use backstays.

The suitability of a 16 foot skiff sail on your mast and rig will be largely a matter of luck. Most sails are cut to suit the rig characteristics. Draft, mast straightness and flexibility all determine the performance of the rig with sail. Sailmakers generally consider these factors when cutting sails for a rig and often make adjustments after a test sail.

The best way to find out is to try. Good luck.

Re: RL24 Mainsail
Try the 16ft skiff web site. I just bought two as-new jibs from there.

Re: RL24 Mainsail
I thought the mast may have been for the Mark IV but the mainsail is not fully battened. The mast has diamonds, is anodised and rotates. Any ideas?
